African Leadership & Climate Change

LEAD Africa is undertaking a series of activities that will respond to selected challenges and recommendations articulated by African regional and sub-regional institutions concerning African leadership on climate change with the Royal Danish Embassy and CoP 15. These were made at our workshop 'African Leadership on Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities for regional institutions' in January 2009 in Tunis.
The activities have been specifically designed to increase cross-stakeholder participation in the international climate change negotiations in Copenhagen in December 2009 and to support the prospects for an informed and consolidated African position therein. This work programme has so far included partnership with and support from a range of agencies including the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, British Council, AfDB, ENDA, and the Royal Danish Embassy. The activities will include the design, publication and dissemination of the challenges and recommendations articulated in the ‘African Leadership on Climate Change: Challenges and Opportunities for Regional Institutions’ workshop. Furthermore, LEAD Africa, will in partnership with Enda Tier Monde, hold two panels to further the discussions around African Leadership on climate change. Furthermore, during the COP15 in Copenhagen, LEAD associations in Senegal, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Malawi and Tanzania will set up a venue, where the live negotiations and events that has particular relevance to Africa will be screened. The shape of the individual event will depend on the exact COP15 agenda, however it is currently estimated that it will consist of a live screening of the opening and closing ceremonies accompanied by discussions and presentations, and relevant screenings supported by question and answer sessions and interviews. back
